Default theme (Kubrick) should default to no pingbacks or comments on pages

That would be nice, but how much pages are most people writing. Might be good to start life as a plugin so people don't have one more thing to consider.

Ok, so if I understand, you plan to delete in the 2.2.x branch the "Discussion" widget from the "Write Page" admin page.

Am I right ? If so, is this mean that I should write a plug-in to allow users to display comments and pings below pages content ?

No, I am not suggesting that anything be deleted from the write page. I am suggesting that a global setting to *globally* enable comments on pages, might best by done as a plugin initially.

I think, unfortunately for us and the users, its actually a bit late to change to making comments/crap on Pages an option, because so many themes have left it out. If it were to be an option, and a theme had left out the function to call the comment form, well, when someone enables it and goes looking for their comments they'll be wondering what's going on.

I don't think a plugin can possibly help here, unless its going to memorize the HTML structure of all the various themes and insert the comment stuff on the page where it would normally be, if that's even possible. Feasible? Doubt it.

I still like the idea, but how to implement it without generating many many headaches, I don't know :).

I was thinking about a way to make the transition smoother.

Here is the plan and goals for each Wordpress release:

• Wordpress 2.3: review the code to make sure all newly created pages have pingbacks and comments set to False. Thanks to this we will have a consistent database.
• Wordpress 2.4: allow pingbacks and comments on pages (= fix displaying in default theme, as decribed in #3753).

What do you think about this ?

I kind of agree with this whole thing. It's actually annoying to have to turn off comments and etc when creating a page. IMO, comments should be off by default while creating pages. Pages are there to be more professional and static feel. Not have comments load the page... like it's just some other blog post...

Why is this needed?

Maybe a setting on the Options page, but a lot of people including me like the auto-comment and pingback.

This issue doesn't appear to have been pushed much this year. I can see why some people might want pingbacks and comments disabled on pages but some of us also like to leave them enabled too. I'm going to recommend closing as wontfix.
