nicenames corrupted if users -user- and user are registered

Description

WordPress sanitizes both -user- and user -nicks to have nice name user. And no worki.

I don't think it's a dupe. The way WP sanitizes nicenames, it strips -'s out too.

My aplogies, I was testing this using the username not the display name.

I'm having a hard time understanding why this isn't a dupe of #1626

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding what's written here, can someone please clarify for me why this is different?

The user_nicename is what is the "display name," and thus it shouldn't be sanitized this drastically.

This is different from, say the login name, which has to be A-Za-z0-9 or whatever.
