Description

#6067 changed from text colors as an indicator of activated vs. deactivated plugins to using different background colors.

It is still very hard to see the difference and there has been some feedback on the testers list.

"I don't know if I would call this a bug per-se, but the color contrast between the plugin-activated and plugin-deactivated is not noticeable enough. It's hard to tell which ones are active and which ones aren't without looking at the activate/deactivate link."

"I still think the ACTIVATED plugins should have the darker grey background color, all plugins that aren't activated could be white... but, that's just me so.. * shrug *"

"I actually like the plugin page - clean and crisp. But it's high near impossible to see the difference working in bright sunlight. And that goes for quite a lot of the soft blues."

"I do have a small issue concerning how the plugin list looks.

I am used to the being able to see for certain when a plugin was activated -- because it was green. Now it is really confusing because an activated plugin now has a white background -- which is kind of backwards.

I think the activated plugin should have the color in the background. That way a person naturally assumes it is activated from a quick glance."

I'm not sure I agree with the whole dark=activated, white=not activated. Before I read about this on the testers list, I thought of something similar but the opposite - keep the used plugins white, and darken the unused! Greying out a button is a pretty standard way of telling people that the button isn't active...

I can't help thinking that if I could make a mistake like that, so could other people.

To keep it intuitive, perhaps use some sort of icon? Even if its just a big green tick at the side of the row....

Consulting with Jason and Liz about a couple of possibilities for handling this better. I'll update as I hear back.

I personally reconise something with a darker background as being disabled, And white, sitting in with the rest of the page, to mean enabled.

So i like it as it is.

However, A Visual indication needs to be a bt more obvious, Just throwing ideas out, but, Italics on the deactivated plugins? It makes it fade into the background more.. Maybe text colour could be a bit duller too, shaded = disabled to me.

But thats coming from a Windows world, those on other OS's probably have a different perspective.

Final solution for plugin status per conversation with happy cog. active.png should go in /wp-admin/images/ and 6275.diff provides the markup.

The status column looks funky with the text centered. I've been playing around with the CSS and I think it looks better right aligned.

I also am thinking that a matching icon for the inactive rows balances it a better, but I'm not for sure. Need feedback on the additional icon.

(In [7565]) Cannot use Silk icon because of an incompatible license. Not really needed with background color and "Active" text anyway. see #6275

So, that "checkbox" icon is from FamFamFam's "Silk" collection which is Creative Commons Attribution 2.5 licensed. It's incompatible with the GPL v2. If we're really sold on the idea of an icon, maybe someone within the WP community would do one for us. I don't really miss it, though -- the color background and the "Active" text more than convey the needed information.
